Eales to retire after Tri-Nations

13 April 2012

Australia captain John Eales will retire after the Wallabies' final game of the 2001 Tri-Nations Series against New Zealand.

The second-row forward, who has lead Australia in 52 of his 83 Tests, will bow out on 1 September at Stadium Australia.

Eales was expected to retire after the Lions' series but, buoyed by the 2-1 victory, he opted to lead Australia in the Tri-Nations.

He said: "The game has been kind to me and I'm very thankful for the positive support I've received."

Eales will take up a consultancy role with the Australian Rugby Union advising them on administration, promotions, marketing, player development and welfare.
