Duff set for leading role against Russia

14 April 2012

Damien Duff will assume the leading role when the Republic of Ireland face Russia at Lansdowne Road in Dublin tomorrow.

In the absence of Tottenham striker Robbie Keane, Chelsea's £17million signing from Blackburn is seen as the man who could earn the win which could guarantee the Irish a place in the Euro 2004 finals.

"It's a massive challenge," Duff said. "Robbie is a big loss. He can always nick a goal. We need to win but I think we have the players who can do a job."

Chris Hughton, the Spurs and Ireland coach, is keen to see what lessons Duff has learned since his big move.

"Damien will benefit from having quality players around him and how he deals with it is down to his personality and strength of character," Hughton said.
