Downes looks to sign defenders

Raoul Simons13 April 2012

Brentford manager Wally Downes was today hoping to sign central defenders Leo Roget and Ibrahima Sonko for the rest of the season.

The pair were outstanding as Brentford kept a second successive clean sheet in last night's 1-0 victory over Bristol City.

Both players, who joined the club on a non-contract basis last Friday, have now been offered one-year deals and Downes is awaiting their decision.

He said: "I like the fact they both enjoy defending and I am hopeful that we will sign the pair of them."

Brentford made the most of some good fortune against the Robins. The visitors hit the same post three times in the second half before Stephen Hunt coolly converted a 68th-minute penalty. Danny Wilson's side were later reduced to 10 men when Aaron Brown was red-carded for a two-footed challenge on Sonko.

Downes said: "We did ride our luck a bit, if the goal had been another two feet wider they would have won the game."
