Distin move held up - Pearce

14 April 2012

Manchester City manager Stuart Pearce has hinted Sylvain Distin's proposed £4.5million move to Middlesbrough may have hit a stumbling block.

City have given permission for their former skipper to speak with the Teessiders knowing he is about to enter the final year of his contract and, as yet, has opted not to sign a lucrative extension. It was anticipated Distin would have completed the move in time to play for Boro at newly-promoted Reading on Saturday.

"We have accepted an offer from Middlesbrough but I am led to believe, at this moment in time, he cannot agree personal terms with them," said Pearce.

"If he ends up staying at Manchester City I would be delighted and he will be part of our squad on Sunday. It is as simple as that."

While Pearce would prefer to keep his most experience defender, he understands the logic of trying to cash in on an asset who would be free to quit for nothing at the end of the coming campaign.

The Blues chief is already considering potential replacements just in case Distin does opt to leave, but insists he feels he is currently in a win-win situation.

"I can't lose," he said.

"Either Sylvain goes, which will free up some money for me to invest elsewhere, or he stays and I get to keep a very good player for at least another season.

"It is not really bothering me and I am pleased to say Sylvain has not been affected either. His performances on the training pitch have been as good as anybody.

"It just seems to be a matter of fact for him. He has gone to talk to Middlesbrough but if he can't agree he will play for Manchester City. It makes it very easy for me really."
