Day in the life of World Cup wannabe . . .

Yesterday

6.30am: wake up.

7.30am-8.15am: weights work in the gym.

8.15am-9.15am: skills training on the main rugby pitch working with the team's individual skills coaches.

Breakfast: from a wide-ranging buffet.

10.30am-11.30am: press interviews for the match with France for the chosen 22. 12noon-1.30pm: team training session concentrating on attack.

Lunch: prepared by the hotel's head chef to instructions from the England nutritionist. Two kinds of meat, pasta, potatoes plus vegetables and salad served in team dining room.

Followed by rest period in hotel room. Optional extra work.

4.30pm-6.30pm: more squad training on the pitch.

6.30pm: team meeting to discuss various aspects of the game with France, including line-out analysis of last Saturday's defeat in Marseille.

Players then offered massage and other injury treatments. 8pm: dinner, again prepared to instructions. Snacks - including sandwiches and nuts - available throughout the day in the team room. 10pm: itinerary for the next day is delivered to every players' room. Key fact: When does it all start? How much of a lie-in does that give me?

  • Tuesday's schedule meant an extended team run-out in the evening that finished at 10pm. Jonny Wilkinson returned to his room having concluded his individual kicking session at 11.15pm.
