Davenport takes time out with her family

Lindsay Davenport made a winning start to the clay court season by claiming her third Amelia Island Championship title with a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Italian Silvia Farina Elia.

However, while many of the American's rivals will be heading for Europe to prepare for the French Open, world No1 Davenport feels time with her family in California will put her in a better frame of mind.

"I think that the best shot I have at the French Open is when I just arrive in Paris and play hard court tennis on a clay court," Davenport said. "The longer a trip goes on, I get a bit more homesick." Davenport (above) had to dig deep to beat Farina Elia, who led 4-2 in the second set. "This was a huge win," she said.
