Crowded House Derby challenge is still not certain

Simon Milham13 April 2012

Crowded House is a surprise inclusion among 13 entries unveiled at the six-day stage for the Derby at Epsom.

The winter ante-post favourite for the mile-and-a-half Classic flopped badly on his seasonal return in the Dante Stakes last month, but connections could still rule the colt out.

Trainer Brian Meehan said: "I have still to talk to the principle owner, who is in America. I know what I want to do, but can't say anything until I have spoken to him. A decision will be made later today."

Sea The Stars remains on course to become the first colt since Nashwan 20 years ago to follow up victory in the 2,000 Guineas.

Ladbrokes are the only firm who make John Oxx's star favourite, offering 5-2. Other firms have the Aidan O'Brien-trained Fame And Glory as their market leader.

O'Brien's unbeaten colt, a best-priced 3-1 with William Hill, heads the Ballydoyle team while Rip Van Winkle, Black Bear Island and Masterofthehorse are also prominent in the betting. Classic trial winners Age Of Aquarius and Golden Sword complete his sextet.

The contingent of eight from Ireland is rounded off by 2,000 Guineas third Gan Amhras, trained by Jim Bolger who sent out New Approach to take the race 12 months ago.

Godolphin are pinning their hopes on Kite Wood while trainer William Haggas has a possible outsider in Dee Stakes winner South Easter.

John Gosden's Debussy and Montaff, trained by Mick Channon, complete the list.
