Yorkshire spell out why they axed Matthew Hoggard

10 April 2012

Yorkshire have defended their decision to release Matthew Hoggard and pointed out the former England seamer rejected a new contract earlier in the year.

The 32-year-old had been in talks about taking over the captaincy next season only to be told three days later his contract would not be renewed for financial reasons.

Hoggard said he was "devastated" by the decision but Yorkshire said: "An extremely competitive two‑year contract, with the option of a third year based on performance, was offered to him at the beginning of the season.

"Matthew turned that down as he wanted a higher salary and longer contract. The club and player agreed they would review the situation at the end of the season.

"Over the summer the club have reviewed their playing staff for 2010 and made plans to secure a number of key players. This has become increasingly costly due to the tightening of work permit regulations for overseas players and the demand for young England qualified talent."
