Rahul Dravid puts India on front foot

Smashing time: Dravid reaches his century today
10 April 2012

Rahul Dravid hit a century as India dominated West Indies on the opening day of the Second Test at Kolkata but Sachin Tendulkar's quest for his 100th international hundred was again denied.

Dravid made 119 from 207 deliveries before he became the first Test victim of Windies spinner Kraigg Brathwaite. Dravid was bowled by the 18-year-old and the umpires called stumps when nightwatchman Ishant Sharma went for a duck in the following over with the hosts on 346 for five.

Earlier, Gautam Gambhir made 65 from 103 deliveries - his first half century against the West Indies - before slashing Fidel Edwards to Adrian Barath at short cover.

VVS Laxman was unbeaten on 73 at the close but Tendulkar's wait to reach his unprecedented milestone continues, after he fell for 38 in the afternoon session.

Tendulkar and Dravid put on 56 runs for the third wicket but the Little Master fell to a Marlon Samuels catch off Devendra Bishoo just before tea.
