MCC members have been told they will get no refund even if there is no cricket played at Lord’s this season.

Membership costs up to £582 a year and is worth about half-a-million pounds to the MCC’s coffers but, with a 29-year-old waiting list, the board is confident it can survive any potential backlash.

Writing to members last night, the MCC said: “The continuing uncertainty caused by the rapidly changing situation makes it hard to predict when we will once again be able to enjoy cricket in front of a full house at Lord’s, but the prospect of that happening in 2020 looks increasingly remote.

“The committee has reluctantly taken the decision that this year’s annual subscriptions will not be fully or partially refunded. Ultimately, you own the club and I hope that in that context you will be understanding of the position the committee has felt it needed to take.”
