KP set for talks but there’s zero consolation for him

20 August 2012

Kevin Pietersen hopes to hold talks with England captain Andrew Strauss this week in an effort to play international cricket again.

Sources close to Pietersen said yesterday that discussions would be held but the England and Wales Cricket Board still had not fixed a date in the diary for the meeting.

Pietersen is available for Surrey for their Clydesdale Bank 40 match against Glamorgan at The Kia Oval tomorrow, a match which will see the launch of the Tom Maynard Trust, in memory of the former Surrey batsman who died in mid-June at the age of 23.

Pietersen was dropped by England in the wake of texts sent to South African players during the Second Test at Headingley and his miserable week ended in a suitably dismal manner yesterday after he was dismissed for a golden duck on his return to action at Hampshire.

Cheers rang around the Ageas Bowl after Pietersen was bowled by left-arm spinner Liam Dawson, although that may have had more to do with his acrimonious departure from Hampshire in 2010.

That followed fresh allegations that he had described Strauss in offensive terms in one of the messages to the South Africans.

Pietersen’s camp would not comment on the content of the texts yesterday. He has apologised for the texts but has not divulged their specific content.
