Injured Stuart Broad is flying home early from India forcing him to hand the Twenty20 captaincy to Eoin Morgan.

Broad was left out of the side for the Third Test victory in Kolkata and was unable to play in the Fourth due to a heel injury.

The all-rounder had a scan on the injury and the England and Wales Cricket Board have decided to send him home for treatment, along with Steven Finn, who has a lower back problem.

Broad would have led the side for two T20 matches next week but the ECB said today: “Stuart has been ruled out of the upcoming two-match Twenty20 series against India with a bruised left heel. He will return to the UK immediately to begin a period of rest and rehabilitation.”

Cricket chiefs hope Broad will have recovered in time to return to India next month for the final two matches of the one-day series.

Finn, who replaced Broad for the Third Test and made a solid return with four wickets, was going to be rested for the T20 series but it is hoped he will be available for the ODI series despite the disc strain in his back.

England’s one-day series does not start until January 11. The first game is in Rajkot and England will travel to Kochi, Ranchi, Mohali and Dharmasala. The tour ends on January 27 and England will then move on to New Zealand, with the first ODI on February 9.

Uncapped Middlesex seamer James Harris, 22, has been added to the squad for the T20 games.

He is currently in India with the Performance Programme squad in Pune.
