Middlesex have the chance to end their 23-year wait for the country championship title, and Standard Sport’s Matt Majendie runs you through the permutations on the final day…

HOW THE TITLE CAN BE WON AND LOST…

SCORING (Bonus points)

Batting: 200-249 runs = 1pt; 250-299 = 2pts; 300-349 = 3pts; 350-399 = 4pts; 400 or over = 5pts.
Bowling: 3-5 wkts = 1pt; 6-8 = 2pts; 9-10 = 3pts

THE PERMUTATIONS

  • Middlesex will be champions if they beat Yorkshire, regardless of bonus points.
  • Yorkshire will land the title if they beat Middlesex with maximum points.
  • If Middlesex lose, they cannot be champions if Yorkshire get one bonus point.
  • If Yorkshire win with no bonus points, Middlesex could still take title as long as Somerset don’t beat Notts. They would have to take full bonus points and Yorkshire none at all, which is highly unlikely.
  • Somerset must beat Notts with one more bonus point than Yorkshire to land the title. If Yorkshire and Somerset are level on points, Somerset would finish ahead on fewest losses.
  • Should any sides finish equal on points, the championship will be decided on these variables in the following order: Most wins, fewest losses, team achieving most points in contests between those level on points, most wickets taken and most runs scored.
