Connor setback for UK Athletics

14 April 2012

British athletics' search for a new performance director looks to have hit a hurdle after the anticipated appointment of Keith Connor suffered a setback.

Former Olympic bronze medallist Connor is reported to have returned to Australia, where he is the sport's head coach, after failing to agree terms with UK Athletics chief executive David Moorcroft.

UK Athletics said last night: "We would like to confirm that no appointment has been made for the position of performance director. We are seeking the best talent available and the search is ongoing." The uncertainty over Connor is another embarrassment for British athletics and the development comes a day after Australian officials hinted Connor would stay on despite a review that was critical of his management style.

Herb Elliott, chairman of an Australian Sports Commission review of the sport, said: "There is a view that he has moved the sport forward.

"He's had to take some very tough action. As a consequence, he's rubbed a few people up the wrong way and some are against him. He's done an excellent job."
