Comfortable win for Federer

12 April 2012

World number one Roger Federer overcame Michael Russell in straight sets to secure a second-round date with France's Thierry Ascione at the French Open in Paris.

The Swiss star had opened up a 6-4 4-1 lead on Monday when play was suspended because of rain.

Resuming on a sun-kissed Philippe Chatrier court, Federer closed out an impressive 6-4 6-2 6-4 triumph.

Home favourite Ascione is next up for the top seed after he routed qualifier Marin Cilic in straight sets.

Meanwhile, Tommy Robredo wasted no time completing a 6-3 6-4 6-2 win over Sergio Roitman in a match carried over from Monday.

Argentina's Guillermo Canas, the 19th seed, was a comfortable 6-3 6-1 6-4 winner over Victor Hanescu, while 13th seed Mikhail Youzhny also progressed when Jan Hernych was forced to retire with a back injury.

Jurgen Melzer, the 27th seed from Austria, defeated Jose Acasuso in straight sets.
