Chelsea have a verbal agreement to sign Hernan Crespo at £17million from Inter Milan.

Although Inter directors flew back to Italy today claiming no deal had yet been agreed for the striker, Standard Sport understands a basic deal has been thrashed out, although it has not yet been signed.

Chelsea had made an initial bid of £13m but have now upped this and a formal agreement seems close. The player has basically agreed personal terms after talks at Stamford Bridge yesterday.

Marco Branca, Inter's sporting director, claimed from Heathrow Airport: "We are returning to Milan today. We will have to wait a couple of days to see if it's either everything, or nothing."
