Carroll's ready to hammer out deal

West Ham look certain to complete the signing of Northern Ireland international goalkeeper Roy Carroll tomorrow.

Carroll, 27, will become manager Alan Pardew's first signing following West Ham's promotion to the Premiership, subject to a medical.

Pardew wanted an experienced goalkeeper with Jimmy Walker out of action with a serious knee injury and moved quickly for Carroll, who had been released by Manchester United.

West Ham also talked to another former United goalkeeper, Fabien Barthez, but Carroll was always their first choice.

Veteran striker Teddy Sheringham and club captain Christian Dailly have also signed new contracts and the club are also expected to offer deals to Chris Powell and Shaun Newton this week.

Pardew, who has almost £20 million to spend, is also expected to offer Tomas Repka a new deal. One of the squad's top earners, Repka had agreed to leave with a year left on his contract before the club were promoted but could stay on a new deal worth considerably less.

Pardew is also preparing a £1.2million bid for Watford striker Heidar Helguson. If Watford sell Helguson, they will try and replace him with Swindon's highly rated striker Sam Parkin.

The Vicarage Road club have already had two bids of around £500,000 turned down for the 24-year-old but would be willing to increase their last offer to get their man.
