Campbell 'set to stay' with Spurs

Tottenham's hopes of keeping Sol Campbell at White Hart Lane have been given a significant boost.

There was confirmation today from Barcelona that they want the England central defender - but manager Carlos Rexach also stressed that the deal is far from complete.

He also believes there is a good chance that Campbell will stay with Tottenham because of his strong links to the club.

Rexach, who was at Highbury with Barcelona for David Seaman's testimonial, said: "There has been contact between Barcelona and Campbell. It is true there have been negotiations. He wants some more days to think about it. The problem is whether Campbell wants to leave Tottenham.

"We want him because we have had a lot of defensive problems this season and he would make us stronger.

"He is aggressive and he has experience. But, in my personal opinion, I think he will stay at Tottenham if he reaches an agreement with them."

Barcelona are thought to be offering the 27-year-old in excess of £50,000 a week and he would also secure a massive signing-on fee because he would be a free transfer signing under the Bosman ruling. Arsenal have also been linked with the England star.

Meanwhile, Teddy Sheringham, Manchester United's top scorer and the double Footballer of the Year, could announce this weekend whether he will stay at Old Trafford or rejoin Tottenham.

Spurs manager Glenn Hoddle has admitted his interest in the striker and is willing to offer him a two-year deal worth around £35,000-a-week.

This betters the deal tabled by United and the champions have refused to budge on their offer of a one-year contract worth £35,000-a-week.
