Brown's World Cup Budget boost

13 April 2012

Gordon Brown today had some welcome news for beer-drinking football fans ahead of this summer's World Cup.

The Chancellor, unveiling his sixth budget in the House of Commons, revealed that duty on beer produced by the nation's smallest brewers would be slashed before the Finals kick-off in Korea and Japan on May 31.

The Chancellor said it was a cut "equal to 14p off each pint to be implemented for village pubs and small breweries by this summer - in time for the World Cup".

The news, which was greeted with cheers from MPs, will also be welcomed by England fans.

They face an early trip to their local pub to watch matches, some of which start as early as 6.30am UK-time.

Mr Brown also announced an extra £20 million to improve amateur sports clubs.
