Brooking backs inquiry extension

12 April 2012

Sir Trevor Brooking has welcomed the Premier League's decision to grant a two-month extension to the Lord Stevens inquiry into allegations of corruption in the game.

Lord Stevens, the former Metropolitan Police commissioner, investigated whether there had been any irregularities in the 362 transfers completed between January 1, 2004 and January 31, 2006, and has asked for more time to "sign off" 39 of those transfers, which involve eight clubs.

Brooking, the FA's director of technical development, told Sky Sports News: "Most people would welcome the fact that, having had the initial investigation, they have now extended it further, and people would possibly have been disappointed if it had evolved without any definite conclusion one way or the other. Hopefully (Lord Stevens) will get the access and the further details he is looking for."
