Botham tribute to Monty

14 April 2012

Former England captain Ian Botham has described Monty Panesar as the "finest left-arm spinner in the world".

The 24-year-old claimed three for 39 in the second innings against Pakistan at Headingley as England clinched victory in the four-Test series. And Botham has backed Panesar to prosper when England head to Australia in defence of the Ashes.

"To bowl with as much control as Monty did in both innings was a tremendous feat," Botham told the Daily Mirror. "Watch this space, Australia - England have unearthed a spin jewel of their own."

He added: "Look at England's last two results against Pakistan and work out the common denominator for yourselves.

"Monty has taken 14 wickets (16 in the series so far) in those two victories with an economy rate of around 2.6 runs per over."
