Australia won the first match in the VB triangular one-day international series, beating the West Indies comprehensively by 116 runs at the MCG.

The visitors, chasing a target of 302 to win, struggled against Australia left-arm wrist spinner Brad Hogg.

The Western Australian claimed five for 32 as the West Indies clawed their way to 185 all out in 47 overs. Only Brian Lara (58) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (46) showed any opposition.

Damien Martyn had earlier led Australia's charge to 301 for four, scoring an unbeaten 95, while opener Michael Clarke, replacing the rested Matthew Hayden, hit 66.

Captain Ricky Ponting made 78 before being run out.
