Athletics bid under threat

London's plans to stage the world championships in 2005 were facing increasing uncertainty today after UK Sport refused to underwrite the cost of staging the event.

UK Athletics, the sport's governing body who were awarded the right to host the event last April, had hoped government backed agency UK Sport would step in after mayor Ken Livingstone refused to provide reassurances.

UK Sport chairman Sir Rodney Walker said today: "UK Sport is simply not in a position to stand behind the World Athletics Championships. We are not resourced to do so."
