Ashworth: Hodgson has ultimate say

12 April 2012

West Brom sporting director Dan Ashworth insists new head coach Roy Hodgson will have the final say on any potential signings.

Hodgson will be working closely with Ashworth to identify potential targets for when the transfer window reopens this summer, but the former Liverpool boss will have the ultimate say on who is brought into the Hawthorns.

Ashworth confirmed: "My job is to line up players, in conjunction with Roy, helping with transfer fees, wages, and maybe doing a bit of groundwork. But ultimately there is no point in bringing in a player Roy doesn't like because he won't play. Roy has the ultimate say."

Hodgson said: "I will be working closely with Dan, who will be very important to me and the club because a very important part of every club is recruitment.

"We'll work closely together, identifying the players we need and seeing whether they will help West Bromwich Albion."

Hodgson will have the title of head coach as opposed to manager but it will not alter in any the way he works compared to at other clubs.

He said: "I've got the job I've always done since 1976. I've been called trainer, coach, mister, manager and leader.

"I'm the man who works with the players every day, works with the team, picks the team and tries to get them playing in a certain way.

"I know West Brom do tend to make a bit of a thing about the word 'coach' instead of 'manager' but it doesn't make any difference to me and the job I'll be doing."
