Possible return: Jack Wilshere

Arsenal are hopeful Jack Wilshere will return to training tomorrow in a bid to be fit for Saturday’s Premier League game at Aston Villa.

The 22-year-old turned his right ankle towards the end of Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat at Borussia Dortmund but was forced to play on for the final six minutes because Arsene Wenger had already used his three substitutions.

There were fears Wilshere could face a substantial lay-off given his history with ankle problems but it is understood that the midfielder will attempt to train at London Colney tomorrow to prove his fitness.

Wenger could decide not to risk Wilshere at Villa Park given his previously stated fears of placing too much strain on him but the initial indications are that this latest incident is nothing serious and he is likely to be available.

Mathieu Debuchy has an appointment with a specialist tomorrow to determine the full extent of the Frenchman’s ankle ligament injury sustained in last weekend’s 2-2 draw against Manchester City.

It is believed that Debuchy is facing up to three months out but Wenger has so far been reluctant to confirm any timescale with the club ordering multiple scans to assess the problem.
