Angel impressed with Barry's form

12 April 2012

Juan Pablo Angel is confident Aston Villa skipper Gareth Barry will earn an England call-up "sooner rather than later" from Steve McClaren.

Barry has been in outstanding form during the current campaign despite temporarily moving from midfield to left-back, and he scored a stunning equaliser against his boyhood heroes Tottenham in Saturday's 1-1 draw.

Angel said: "He is a very intelligent lad and I am sure he will get the chance to play for England - and, when that chance comes around, I am sure he will do everyone proud at Aston Villa."

The Colombia international added: "We all know about Gareth's ability. He has been playing very well from the beginning of the season. Against Tottenham was no exception and he scored a superb goal.

"He is a quality player and he is playing very well week-in and week-out. He is not one of those players that plays one game well and then doesn't perform in the next one.

"He has been doing it consistently over the years and I am sure England need that type of player. Like I said, he is very intelligent and knows his chance will come sooner rather than later."

Defender Olof Mellberg, who was replaced as skipper by Barry in the summer, echoed Angel's sentiments.

He said: "Gareth has done really well. I think Ashley Cole is suspended for the next England European Championship game so that might be an opening for him.

"He has done really well and I am sure he will be in there with England soon."
