Stan Wawrinka rates Andy Murray as only his third choice to win Wimbledon, putting Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer ahead of the British No1.

Wawrinka was knocked out of the Aegon Championships second round 7-6, 7-6 by South African Kevin Anderson yesterday and will remain in London for the build-up to Wimbledon to ensure he gains the maximum practice on a surface he still has to master.

The world No4 and French Open champion does not put himself among the favourites for the Grand Slam, which starts a week on Monday, and ran the rule over the three leading men in the game. “Novak is No1,” said Wawrinka. “He’s been playing so well and after losing the French Open Final he wants more, he wants to come back and win the next big one. I see how Roger is playing and even if he lost a few matches this year, I am sure he will be ready for the grass.

“He loves to play on grass and it is always tough to beat him. If he can get through the first week then he will be tough to beat.

“Andy is up there because he loves grass, is playing at home and has already won Wimbledon a couple of years ago. He’s playing really well this year.”

Murray was playing Spain’s Fernando Verdasco in the second round at Queen’s today.
