They were the four lads from Merseyside who shook the world. And now they have gone back to their roots.

These life-sized recreations of the Beatles were sculpted entirely from privet plants by a team of experts who took 18 months to complete the task.

The topiary moptops have been installed at Liverpool's South Parkway railway station.

Shrub, shrub me do: The topiary of privet plants at Liverpool's South Parkwat station to mark Liverpool's status as European City of Culture this year

It is one of a series of public art exhibitions to celebrate the city's status as European Capital of Culture.

Steve Nicholson, director of the company that designed the figures, said: "The frames were hand-made and welded together and then the privet had to be grown up the frame.

"It was a real challenge but the results are fantastic."

The figure on the left is left-handed, suggesting it must be Paul, with George to his left, Ringo on the drums and John on the right.

Staff at the station have been given lessons in how to keep the band in shape.
