Britain's Got Talent operatic duo Jonathan and Charlotte insist there was never a doubt in their minds about standing up to Simon Cowell after he suggested live on air that they split up.

The music mogul thought Jonathan Antoine, 18, would be better off alone after watching their audition for last year’s series. But Jonathan stuck by Charlotte Jaconelli, 17. They went on to release their debut album, Together, on Cowell’s Syco label and have just signed a £1 million deal with Sony Classical for the follow-up.

They revealed Cowell apologised to them backstage when they returned to perform on Britain’s Got Talent last week — having already said sorry during the show last year. “He said, ‘I love the album, I love the tracks, I’m glad you stayed together,’ which was lovely to hear off camera as it’s more personal,” said Charlotte.

Jonathan added: “When Simon suggested we split there was never a doubt. I just knew what I was going to say and I said it.” The second album, Perhaps Love, is due out in October. The duo are working on it and gearing up for their first tour, which comes to Hammersmith on June 29. But success has not gone to their heads. Charlotte said: “Our rider is water, a kettle and Diet Coke. That’s our diva-ish demand.”
