Hit TV shows Little Britain and The Office will battle it out at this year's British Comedy Awards.

They have two nominations apiece for best TV comedy and the best TV comedy actor title.

The 15th annual awards will also see Glasgow-born actor James McAvoy up for best comedy newcomer for Channel 4's Shameless.

He is up against Catherine Tate (BBC2's The Catherine Tate Show) and Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding (BBC3's The Mighty Boosh).

Martin Clunes will compete against Ricky Gervais, Matt Lucas and David Walliams for the comedy actor title.

Nighty Night, starring Julia Davis and Angus Deayton, is in the running in the best TV comedy section against Little Britain and The Office, and for best new TV comedy against Doc Martin and Life Begins.

Caroline Quentin, who received a special recognition gong at the National Television Awards, is up for best TV comedy actress for Life Begins and Von Trapped.

Other nominees are Catherine Tate (The Catherine Tate Show) and Julia Davis (Nighty Night).

This year's event will be presented by Jonathan Ross, who picked up his first award at last year's ceremony.

Ross is nominated again for best comedy entertainment personality for Friday Night with Jonathan Ross.

He will face fierce competition from Ant and Dec for Saturday Night Takeaway and I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! and Paul Merton for Have I got News For You and Room 101.

Both Ant and Dec shows are also up for best comedy entertainment programme against Have I Got News For You?

Shameless is also up for best TV comedy drama against Jonathan Creek and Doc Martin.

Sex and the City, The Simpsons and Curb your Enthusiasm will battle it out for best international comedy show and School of Rock, Shaun of the Dead and Shrek 2 are up for best comedy film.

The awards will also feature one category, the people's choice award, voted for by the public, and will be screened live on ITV1 in December.
