A shock of red from a double-decker bus, the distinctive black of a London cab — they're instantly recognisable features of the capital and they're symbols that dominate Irish born artist Frank Kiely's new show, "Memoirs of a London Journey".

His monocolour backdrops contain familiar landscapes - the sweep of Regent Street, the imposing facades of Trafalgar Square - but it's the highlighted details of his prints that draw the eye and offer comfort in their familarity.

After arriving in London in 2000 to study at the Royal College of Art, Kiely felt alienated in his new surroundings. The process of familiarisation began with what he saw most regularly; a bus, a taxi, a phonebox, a Tube sign.

By creating images that are so hauntingly familiar, he hopes people can reinterpret each piece to fit their own experiences of the city.

Frank Kiely's Memoir's of a London Journey will run from 6th-25th September at Mark Jason Fine Art, First Floor, 71 New Bond Street, London W1S 1DE. Tel: 020 7629 4080. Email info@jasonfinearts.com
