Jack P. Shepherd has got engaged.

The 'Coronation Street' actor proposed to long-term girlfriend Lauren Shippey - mother of his two-year-old daughter Nyla - with a £3,000 ring and the pair are now planning their wedding for next year.

The news of the proposal comes after Sammy Milewski gave birth to Jack's son, Greyson, following a one-night stand behind Lauren's back, but friends say the couple are now keen to move on with their lives.

One told the News of the World: "Jack and Lauren are both delighted. It has been a very difficult time for them with Sammy having the baby. Lauren's been mature and understands Jack made a terrible mistake. Now he has made the ultimate statement that he wants to be with her for the rest of his life."

Following the birth of Greyson in January, Jack - who plays David Platt in the ITV1 soap - underwent a DNA test that later proved he was the father. However, he is yet to see his son as he wants to dedicate his time to Lauren and Nyla but friends insist he will pay maintenance.

One said: "Lauren and Nyla are his family and he knows he can't be part of Greyson's life and keep hold of Lauren. But there is no question of him not paying."
