Paloma Faith has been turned into a hologram for the first ever holographic live performance by an artist at a public gig in the UK.

The technology uses high-definition cameras and super-bright projectors, combining them with a Victorian trick called Pepper’s Ghost which has been fooling audiences since the 1860s.

The Hackney singer was filmed at the London studios of Musion, which has created images of Mariah Carey and the Black Eyed Peas and was responsible for an appearance by the late rapper Tupac at this year’s Coachella festival in California.

Faith, 27, said: “It’s so weird and exciting. It’s really easy and quick. You basically just perform once and it’s in the bag. It took them about three or four minutes to tweak the lights and get the camera set up and then off we went. It makes sense.

“As with all technology, it should be used to add another dimension to performers as opposed to taking the place of. If, for whatever reason, you were unable to be in two places at once, you now can be. Or you could do a show from your house. Isn’t that amazing? You could do a gig from your kitchen!”

She recorded her single Picking Up The Pieces, and the hologram will be projected at Best Of Britannia — a three-day event showcasing the country’s top music, art, design and manufacturing in Clerkenwell. Another artist, whose identity is being kept secret, is also appearing as a hologram.

The Pepper’s Ghost trick, named after John Henry Pepper, uses a sheet of glass to reflect an image onto the stage that would otherwise be out of sight.

Tickets for the event are £5 (bestofbritannia.com).
