Wayne Rooney was left red-faced after he took to Instagram to celebrate St Patrick’s Day – by posting the wrong flag.

Rooney, 30, uploaded a picture of himself alongside his former Manchester United team mates Jonny Evans and John O'Shea.

He captioned the image: “#TBT - Celebrating with my mates. Happy St Patrick's Day.”

But the footballer was clearly confused and followed the caption with a thumbs up emoji, a shamrock – and the Ivory Coast flag.

Confused: Wayne Rooney muddled the national flags

His mistake was soon 'flagged' on social media by users who ridiculed the gaffe.

One user posted: “He’s only gone and put the Ivory Coast flag up.”

Another wrote simply "Ivory Coast flag" followed by a row of crying with laughter emojis.

Others mocked his geography with one tweeting: “Wayne Rooney wishing a happy paddys day with an Ivory Coast flag seriously give that man some crayons and a colouring book!”

Rooney later edited the post with the correct flag.

Correct: The footballer edited his post to add in the right flag
