The 70th Venice International Film Festival kicked off in a spectacular fashion with an influx of stars jetting into the Italian city.

Getting things off to a glamorous start were George Clooney and Sandra Bullock as their film Gravity opened this year’s festival.

Upping the style quotient at this Italian film extravaganza were Carey Mulligan, the Slumdog Millionaire star Freida Pinto, Downton Abbey’s Michelle Dockery, American actress Gabrielle Union, Mia Waiskowska and actress Francesca Cavallin who looked elegant in a long-sleeves white gown.

Some of the highlights of this year’s festival were the premiers of the Matt Damon starrer The Zero Theorem, and Stephen Frears’ Philomena starring Judi Dench, The Skin with Scarlett Johansson and Peter Landesman’s Parkland.

Twenty films, which include three British entries and for the first time two documentaries – The Unknown Known: The Life and Times of Donald Rumsfeld and Sacro GRA, are running for the Golden Lion trophy, which will be awarded on 7 September.
