Suicide Squad director David Ayer has hit back at scathing reviews.

The DC Comic’s film was expected to be a summer blockbuster, but it has been panned by critics for “appalling sexism” and “hideously timed gun worship”.

Others branded it “soul-sickening”, “messy” and warned that it “isn't even the good kind of bad”.

Ayer defended the film – which stars Margot Robbie and Will Smith – and said he ‘believes’ in the production.

He tweeted a quote from Mexican revlutionary Emiliano Zapata which translates as: “I’d prefer to die standing, than to live always on my knees.”

Keen to reiterate his love for the film he added: “Zapata quote is my way of saying I love the movie and believe in it. Made it for the fans. Best experience of my life.”

The reviews will come as a blow to Warner Bros. whose previous film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was also heavily criticised.

Suicide Squad boasts a star studded cast including Cara Delevingne, Jared Leto and Viola Davis and follows a group of superhuman inmates who are used by a secret government agency to complete illegal tasks in exchange for freedom.

The cast have been busy promoting the film and will arrive in London for the European premiere tonight.

Ayer found himself in hot water at the New York premiere this week when he echoed a fan's "f*** Marvel" comment.

Suicide Squad is set for UK cinema release on Friday.
