Sir Elton John says he had once feared he may have had his sons too late in life but that they now make his blues go away in “a nanosecond”.

The 68-year-old and his husband David Furnish had Zachary, five, and Elijah, three, via a surrogate mother.

Speaking as he signed copies of his new album Wonderful Crazy Night, he said: “Life is a challenge — there are ups and downs for everybody. Having young kids has helped. No matter how blue you can be, spending a nanosecond with those boys makes it all go away.

“I thought maybe we’d had children too late, but it has come at a wonderful time in my life.”

He said his new album’s upbeat sound came from his happiness: “I have a wonderful husband, a great family, a wonderful career, wonderful friends, Watford FC are doing well ... Life is good.”

Speaking to Radio 2 about the album ahead of the signing he said: “I think I'm in a good place in my life, so was Bernie Taupin who writes the lyrics,” he explained.

“It was planned, sometimes planning doesn't work out to be the way it should but it all came together in the studio and it was done very quickly and that's how I wanted it to be and it's a fun record.”
