Singer Sam Smith is speaking again after an “horrendous” three weeks with no voice following vocal cord surgery.

The Stay With Me singer cancelled a string of Australian dates last month after doctors discovered a haemorrhage on his vocal chords and he was flown to the United States to see a specialist.

Speaking to Nick Grimshaw on the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show he explained that the problem was caused by "singing too hard for too long".

The multi-award winning artist said the last few weeks had been "horrendous" after doctors banned him from speaking while he recovered.

When asked how he communicated during his three week silence, Smith said he had been “doing a lot of miming”.

He also explained how he had used an app on his phone, but told Grimshaw that he ran into difficulties because “it doesn’t swear which is really annoying because I swear a lot”.

Smith continued: "I haven't properly sung yet, I've just been singing in the shower and stuff.

"I'm just trying to take it slow".

The Lay Me Down singer excited fans when he revealed that he will be back on stage from July 3.

Shortly after the interview he posted a video of himself speaking to his 2.9 million Twitter followers.

He captioned the clip: "A message… x Absolutely cannot wait to perform live again, thank you all for waiting for me!!."
