Sam Smith shames Instagram troll: 'Homophobia is still so present'

Singer Sam Smith has tweeted a screenshot of a homophobic Instagram account which was set up to abuse his sexuality.

Smith, 23, decided to post the image to his 4.5 million followers to highlight how homophobia is still present.

He captioned the image: “This genuinely doesn't offend me, coz I'm way too thick skinned when it comes to this kind of s**t. BUT I just wanted to share this with everyone, so you can see how homophobia is still SO PRESENT in our society!!”

The account description reads: “We hate f****t Smith. There is a f*g, his name is sam. When he’s on I like to cry. He is gay but that’s okay, we can all make fun of him.”

The Lay Me Down singer has opened up in the past about homophobia. Speaking to The Sun, he said: “The toughest time for me was my first year in secondary school when I hadn’t come out as gay. It was actually the denying of being gay that was getting me bullied.

“Guys were asking me all the time, ‘Are you gay?’ I would say no and that would rile them up even more. I came out at the end of year seven when I was 11. That shut a lot of the bullies up.”

“A bunch of boys from a rival school would shout insults at me as I walked from my home to the train station."

Smith is currently on tour in America and recently took a break to visit his wax doppelganger at Madame Tussauds San Francisco.
