Aidan Turner’s brooding good looks were not enough to distract from a very modern alarm box attached to the side of a building in Poldark.

In a publicity shot showing Captain Ross Poldark (Turner) saving kitchen maid Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson), an alarm box is visible next to what appears to be guttering and a TV aerial on the chimney - items that clearly would not have been present in 1782.

The debut show of the BBC remake of the 70s hit grabbed an audience of nearly seven million on Sunday, but fans were quick to complain about other mistakes.

Poverty stricken Demelza’s seemingly perfect make-up proved problematic for one viewer who tweeted: “Looks like Demelza found a stash of make up in Poldark’s booze cabinet.”

Others complained about an unrealistic scar on Poldark’s cheek which was compared to running mascara on social media, and a lighthouse that some fans claimed would not have been built at the time that the drama is set.
