Chart toppers One Direction have joined forces with pop queen Kylie Minogue, Sir Elton John, Queen's Brian May and a host of musicians to create new superband, The Impossible Orchestra for Children in Need.

The 80 piece orchestra featuring 26 artists from varying musical backgrounds have come together for a charity reworking of the Beach Boys 1966 hit, God Only Knows.

Named The Impossible Orchestra, the music royalty megaband made their debut across all of the BBC's TV and Radio stations in a three minute video at 8pm last night.

All together: new super group The Impossible Orchestra

The video - including Sam Smith, The Foo Fighter's Dave Grohl and Florence Welch - is in in aid of the launch of the broadcaster's project BBC music - a new music initiative featuring a wave of new programmes and artist profiles online.

Bob Shennan, Director of BBC Music said: “This is an exciting moment for BBC Music as we launch to a global audience. With the 80-piece BBC Concert Orchestra at its heart and comprising an array of iconic music stars, from a wide range of musical genres, this “impossible” orchestra is a celebration of all the talent, diversity and musical passion found every single day throughout the BBC.

“Our audiences are very clear in their passion for music and that’s why BBC Music exists: to create, curate and celebrate music – for the love of it.”

On working with the charity super group Queen guitarist Brian May said: “Working on God Only Knows made me appreciate its musical construction more fully. It was like getting a glimpse into the mind of its creators - the Beach Boys, and in particular, Brian Wilson. It’s a unique piece, and the experience of being a part of this new production was a great pleasure.”

Sam Smith may be a multi-award winning artist but he was star struck on meeting Stevie Wonder for the new collaboration. He said: “Being part of this campaign was so incredible. For me, God Only Knows is a song that has been and will forever be part of pop history and to be singing it alongside my idols was overwhelming. Plus I got to meet Stevie Wonder which blew my mind.”

The track - which will be released as a single for Children in Need - is available for download now.
