An online petition has been launched calling for TV chef Ainsley Harriott to replace Adam Smith on the £20 note.

Members of the public have called for the Ready Steady Cook star, 58, to be the new face of the legal tender so he can "get his glory".

More than 11,000 people have so far signed the Change.org petition to replace Smith - an economist and philosopher – with the former face of Fairy Liquid adverts.

A mission statement on the petition website reads simply: "Ainsley Harriott is an oily god, it is only right he gets his glory on the £20 note."

Supporters of the petition have described Harriott as "a national treasure".

The Bank of England is asking members of the public to suggest people to replace Smith on the new note which is expected in early 2016.

They public has until July 19 to suggest an artist, sculptor, printmaker, designer, ceramicist, architect, fashion designer, photographer or filmmaker for the note.
