Maya Jama has left BBC Radio 1 after two years

Maya Jama has announced she is quitting her BBC Radio 1 show.

In a statement, Jama, 25 explained: “Thanks to all you cuties that tuned into the show.

“It was so great to hear that we have been getting the largest proportion of under-35s tuning in for our on-demand show via BBC Sounds.

“So we are going out with a bang! Love you.”

She added on her Instagram page: “As you know I have been juggling and there are a lot of exciting commitments happening that would mean I’m not able to dedicate the time needed to my weekly radio show.

“I’ve loved every moment of my time at Radio 1 and I would like to thank the team for their hard work and friendship during the last two years. It’s been a journey.”

BBC controller of pop music Lorna Clarke said: "We'd like to thank Maya for all her commitment and hard work at Radio One, and we wish her all the very best with her future."

Jama previously joined the radio station’s popular weekend line-up in 2018, presenting a breakfast show on Friday and Saturday mornings.

Further explaining why Jama left BBC Radio 1, the station explained she had “exciting commitments later in the year" meaning she was not able to "dedicate the time needed to her show" – which has fuelled further rumours of the star appearing on Strictly Come Dancing.

Jama has seen her career go from strength to strength over the past few years, seeing her regularly feature on television.

As well as co-hosting ITV gameshow Cannonball, Jama presented the first series of The Circle in 2018, as well as Channel 4 telethon fundraiser Stand Up to Cancer and BBC’s Sport Relief.

She also serves as a team captain on ITV2’s panel show Don’t Hate the Playaz.
