The Lord of the Rings cast gave fans “squad goals” when they reunited 15 years after starring in The Fellowship of the Ring.

Dominic Monaghan — who played Meriadoc Brandybuck in the epic franchise – gathered his former cast mates to re-enact a famous shot from the first film.

Monaghan, Orlando Bloom (Legolas), Elijah Wood (Frodo Baggins), Billy Boyd (Peregrin Took) and Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) grabbed various items of cutlery to strike a pose from the Moria fight scene.

Monaghan jokingly captioned the shot with a Boromir quote: “They have a cave troll. #squadgoals.”

Sean Bean – who played Boromir – was absent from the mini reunion, as were Sean Astin, Ian McKellen, and John Rhys-Davies.

Monaghan posted several pictures documenting their gathering, including one of himself and Mortensen alongside the caption: “My captain. My king.”

Boyd joked about Wood’s hat being made from “Mithril” – a fictional metal used to make effective lightweight armour.

He tweeted: “Elijah was thinking ahead and of his head....he wore a Mithril hat! Intelligent Forward thinking from the ring bearer. BB x.”

The mini reunion came months after casting director Amy Hubbard addressed Monaghan's comments about David Bowie auditioning for a role in Lord of the Rings.

“As I was reading a magazine waiting, David Bowie came in and signed his little list and went in. I’m assuming he read for Gandalf," he said.

“I can’t think of anything else he would’ve read for. He may have read for something else but I’m a huge David Bowie fan, and I was lucky enough to know his son now, so just seeing him in person was pretty special to me.”

But Hubbard said he never actually auditioned because he couldn’t commit to the trilogy’s lengthy filming schedule.
