Jesy Nelson has opened up about the “horrendous” pain of breaking up with someone, months after she split from Jake Roche.

Nelson, 25, was engaged to the Rixton singer, but the pair called time on their relationship in Novermber last year.

Speaking with her Little Mix bandmates on radio show Z100 Nelson said: “When you break up with someone it’s awful. It’s like one of the worst pains. It’s horrendous.”

The group were on the show to promote their US tour with Ariana Grande and opened up about their recent single Shout Out to my Ex – which the girls penned to “empower” their fans.

Nelson said: “We all love to have some kind of sad song that we sit and cry to, but at the end of the day you need something that makes you feel empowered and think: ‘I don’t need you anymore. I’m going to go out with my girls and my boys and I’m going to get over you’.

“That’s exactly what Shout Out To My Ex does.”

Band mate Perrie Edwards – who went through her own public break-up with ex-fiance Zayn Malik in 2014 – also opened up about how the girls support each other during tough times in the spotlight.

"I think you have to learn to have a thick skin," she said. "I think it comes with being in a girl band and being an artist. People want to know what you're doing and what you're up to, which is fine with us.

"We have each other luckily, so we experience everything together and we've always got each other's backs."
