Keira Knightley looked dazzling at the world premiere of Anna Karenina in Leicester Square last night, wearing a Chanel gown on a red carpet hung with chandeliers.

Knightley, 27,  plays the eponymous heroine in Tom Stoppard's new adaptation of Tolstoy's epic Russian tragedy, directed by Joe Wright and co-starring Jude Law and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

Law plays Anna's husband, Karenin, and Taylor-Johnson is her lover, Vronsky.

Law, 39, was made to look old, ugly and balding for his role as the sombre husband. "I didn't look quite the same as I do on set, off set, but my haircut didn't go down very well with my children," he said. "I think that's why I wore a hat for the best part of three months."

Anna Karenina opens in cinemas on September 7.
