US actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus has revealed she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

The 56-year-old star of hit comedy Veep made the announcement on Twitter.

“1 in 8 women get breast cancer,” she wrote. “Today I'm the one.

“The good news is I have the most glorious group of supportive and caring family and friends, and fantastic insurance through my union.”

She continued: “The bad news is that not all women are so lucky, so let's fight all cancers and make universal health care a reality.”

An “army of fans” reached out to the actress to lend their support to her fight against the disease, including Lena Dunham.

The Girls actress described Louis-Dreyfus as one of the “strongest people” she knows and joked that “cancer is gonna be real sorry it tried any weird moves on her”.

Her Veep co-stars also reached out with Timothy Simons tweeting “f*** cancer” and Tony Hale writing: “We love this woman.”

Former Vice President Joe Biden posted: “We Veeps stick together. Jill and I, and all of the Bidens, are with you, Julia.”

The news comes weeks after she picked up her record breaking sixth Emmy Award in a row for Outstanding Lead Actress for her role in HBO series Veep.

It marked her seventh gong overall after previously winning for The New Adventures of Old Christine.

HBO bosses sent their love and praised her “tenacity and undaunted spirit.”

“Our love and support go out to Julia and her family at this time,” the broadcaster said in a statement. “We have every confidence she will get through this with her usual tenacity and undaunted spirit, and look forward to her return to health and to HBO for the final season of Veep.”
