It may still be two years away from release, but the first image from the new Pirates of The Caribbean film has appeared online.

Super-producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who pioneered the franchise since the first instalment when the concept of a film based on a Disney ride was widely deemed to be a bad idea, has tweeted a first look at Johnny Depp as Captain Jack in the new film.

Showing Sparrow tied to the mast of a ship, Bruckheimer posted the photo saying, “Captain Jack is back and we're not letting him go.”

Depp is reprising his most well-known character for the fifth time, which will see him face off against Javier Bardem as the villainous Captain Salazar. The film will also star Skins actress Kaya Scodelario, Geoffrey Rush and Stephen Graham, with Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner rumoured to return after bowing out of third film On Stranger Tides.

The plot’s official synopsis is as follows:

Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is set for release in July 2017
