James Bay wants to buck the trend of solo singer-songwriters by forming a supergroup — and Adele is top of his wishlist of fantasy bandmates.

The musician, 25, is riding high after a breakthrough year that saw his debut album Chaos And The Calm top the charts and perform strongly in America.

This week he collected the gong for best new act at the Q Awards. He told the Standard: “I’m always up for a supergroup — that kind of stuff is awesome. Blind Faith was Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood.

“I mean, I don’t know who’s up for it, but yeah. Ed Sheeran would be cool, but so would Dave Grohl. There’s a lot of wonderful female artists out there too — KT Tunstall’s still making some incredible records, Corinne Bailey Rae is here but I haven’t even had the balls to say hi.

“Then there’s people like Adele but it’s so hard to talk about those kind of people in these terms because they’re such superhero, solo acts. But in a dream world, sure.”

Bay, below, has tour dates lined up for Europe and America this year but said he is not putting himself under pressure to produce new songs for his second album.

Speaking backstage at the Q Awards at the Grosvenor House hotel in Mayfair, he added: “I’m excited about the new music I’m working on. It’s a slow process because there’s no kind of deadline I’m under at the moment. I’ve not given myself one.

“But there’s more demand for more shows in other parts of the world which is great, because it gives me more time to think about and work on new material.”
