Wallpaper just one wall in a large repeating pattern and paint the other three in a complementary colour. Henry Davis's hall paper is from Cole & Son (020 7607 4288), while the bedroom paper is from Trevor Howsam's prop house in Acton (020 8838 6166). Let wallpaper speak for itself ? don't try hanging pictures over it.

Strip yellow-varnished pine furniture and either matt paint or limewash it for a smarter finish.

Paint walls and woodwork in the same colour (walls in emulsion, woodwork in eggshell or gloss) to prevent a room from looking broken up or smaller.

Display collections in clustered generic groups, ie framed black-and-white photographs should all be hung closely on the same (flat-painted) wall.

Don't feel you have to electrify chandeliers or that they are too ornate to hang in everyday rooms.
